Confidentiality and privacy are essential in establishing an effective therapeutic relationship. Laws are in place to ensure that physicians maintain patients’ privacy. Baxter Forensic Group ensures that patient information remains confidential.

Release of information to third-parties requires the patient’s consent. There are important exceptions, where physicians are required by law to breach confidentiality to ensure the safety of individuals and the public. These situations requiring disclosure include:

  • Suspected child abuse or dependent adult/elder abuse
  • Serious imminent harm to self or others, if an adequate safety plan is not in place
  • Any pilot, air traffic controller, or flight engineer who is suffering from a condition that might impact flight safety
  • Court order

Additionally, there might be circumstances where individuals who are deemed unfit to drive are reported to Alberta Transport to ensure road safety.
